Switch to Linux!
Why? What? How?
I'm so exited about Linux, I just have to make a whole page devoted to it, lets start at the very beginning for all you die-hard Windows Users out there who have not seen the light yet and just want to know what all the fuss it about :-)
When you fire up your PC, it starts loading what is know as the "Operating System" or "OS", this is the huge set of programs that talk to your PC's hardware and tells it what to do. Many years ago, there was just "DOS" a text-only system, but in 1985 Microsoft released Windows, and it became the standard for most people.
Gradually, there were alternatives to windows that would pop up, but not really amounting to much, except Apple's MAC OS, which became the 2nd choice. This was soon followed by Linux, a completely free and open-source operating system. With it being "Open Source", it meant that anyone with some programming knowledge could create their own flavour of Linux, and that they did, there are literally 100s of different Linux "Distros" (Distributions) available and still are. But Linux was still regarded as a "Geeky" OS, as it just wasn't that easy to use compared to Windows or Mac OS. But things have changed, a new "Distro" came out called Ubuntu Linux, this is the easiest linux to date, and has grown to become the number one, beating long established distros like "Red hat" and "Suse".
So, WHY change to Linux?
- Linux is Free, no serial number, Legally Free to copy and install.
- Linux is stable, no 'blue screen of death'
- Linux is secure, security built in from the start, not an afterthought
- No Viruses or spyware (at the moment!)
- Open source, so no hidden / proprietry code
- Vast amount of free software available
- Just as easy as Windows to use.
But Windows vista looks nice and has special effects!
Oh dear, you need to see this video, its Ubuntu Linux looking
very nice, and also makes a few more comparisons to Windows Vista.
Still Interested?
So, if you've read this far, you must be interested, or you may be thinking "WOW I want this now!!!". One thing to remember, backup your important files first, all your photos, music, videos, documents. Installing Linux could wipe your hard drive clean. You can either do a clean install, which wipes off Windows, or if you're feeling adventurous, you can "dual boot", meaning you keep windows and get to choose which one you run, each time your PC starts. I'll explain both of these methods in part two of this article.
Part two coming soon.....
